Een kroeg zonder bier? En nog wel in fanatiek bierdrinkend Australië? Jawel, dit is echt gebeurd. Ooit was er een pub in Taylors Arm, in de bushland van New South Wales, die geen bier meer had. De legende gaat dat de vaste klanten van de The Cosmopolitan al het bier hadden opgedronken, voordat de er nieuwe fusten waren aangekomen. Paniek alom! "The dry spell causes big men to cry, wild animals to howl and women to look on in bemusement".
Deze tekst is van het liedje 'The pub with no beer' van Aussie icoon Slim Dusty. Het werd in 1957 geschreven naar aanleiding van de bierdroogte van Taylors Arm door de plaatselijke houthakker Gordon Parsons. Het liedje werd één van de bekendste Aussie songs. Zelfs in Engeland, Ierland en Canada zong iedereen mee, waarschijnlijk daar wél met een goed glas bier in de hand.

Tegenwoordig vloeit het gouden vocht weer rijkelijk in Taylors Arm. De Pub with no Beer Brewery zorgt ervoor dat de zeventig inwoners van het dorp nooit meer zonder bier hoeven te zitten. Tijdens de opening in 2005 werd de brouwerij gezegend door pastoor Peter Jones.
De brouwerij wil zelfs de grootste bierproducent worden van Australië! Eigenaar Mr Howe: "I love my beer. I'm passionate about it and I'm a patriotic Australian. The beer-loving public is increasingly demanding fresh, full-flavoured, full-aroma beer. Australians and other beer-lovers want and deserve more than `beer brewed in big metal things. They are willing to pay for quality." Hij is zo overtuigd van zijn biertje dat hij de pub omschrijft als een 'beer-lover's nirvana'.
Jij kunt ook in dit bierwalhalla belanden en het kwaliteitsbiertje zonder kleurstoffen en andere toevoegingen proeven. In Taylors Arm kun je namelijk een Pub with No Beer-tour doen en krijg je zo 'the ultimate craft beer experience'. Eten - en nog meer drinken - kun je in het onlangs geopende restaurant. Er zijn diverse soorten gerechten, met onder andere zoete snacks met natuurlijk bier als ingrediënt. Heb je iets teveel gedronken, dan kun je er blijven slapen.
De 'Pub with No Beer' garandeert je overigens dat ze nooit meer zonder bier zullen zitten...
Je vindt deze kroeg wanneer je in New South Wales de Pacific Highway rijdt, op 25 km ten westen van Macksville tussen Coffs Harbour en Port Macquarie. Het is tegenwoordig zo'n attractie dat je het lang van tevoren ziet aangegeven met billboards en andere borden.
